Notes related to Arte Contemporáneo

Artists who have that ability to approach and distance themselves from reality have always caught my attention. Ronald Morán, (Salvadoran) is one of them; in this case, he offers us a double distancing: the distancing of a mimetic tradition that recycles reality with repeated images to the point of vertigo and, on the other hand, the distancing forced by the Covid 19 pandemic.

The INCISO (Incision) exhibition brings together a group of artists who propose a journey via the collage technique and through the plurality of micro stories inherent to their own life or their interest as visual artists. Open until August 27, 2021, the exhibition is curated by Juan David Quintero Arbeláez.

Power Station of Art (Shanghai) and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris) present the exhibition Trees. With more than 200 artworks from over 30 artists from China, Latin America, India, Iran and Europe, the exhibition celebrates trees and their influence on contemporary art.

Art Focus – Association of Art Galleries of the Americas, exhibits Ecological , which brings together works by artists in different geographies who reflect and provide different approaches to one concern: the environment.

A conscious capture, which thinks of itself, and freezes in order to account for temporal movement.

The group show runs until August 26 at the laNao space in La Condesa, Mexico City. Curated by Manuel Sentíes, COMERSE EL OJO (TO EAT ONE’S EYE) revolves around painting. The artists Anaís Vasconcelos, Luis Figueroa, Lucas Lugarinho and Enrique López Llamas participate.

“It is inevitable to mention the history of painting when we refer to the work of Fernando Uhía, since it seems in the first instance to allude to the theories of color, the purism of the medium and the ruptures of the mimetic representation that occurred during the emergence of the artistic avant-gardes in the first decades of the 20th century. However, Special Defects departs from such assumptions and invites the viewer to an aesthetic experience of color through a unique treatment of paint. The above, from a global language that is expressed through the construction of shapes and colors, which today are not only present in fine arts but also in design and advertising. " Luciana Rizo introduces in the curatorial text.

The Ecuadorian gallery presents A circle called zero, a solo exhibition by David Rickard (New Zealand/UK) curated by Rubén Darío Díaz Chávez. The proposal brings together works in painting, objects, installation, sculpture, video and photography and reflects on the territory, its representation and how we relate to each other in times of pandemic.

Exhibited at La Galería Rebelde (Guatemala City – Los Ángeles), Distensiones is a story, a metaphor of life, of technology versus nature, of the symbiosis and juxtaposition of the evolution of the human being. Within this series there is also a personal narrative of travels, experiences and connections with past generations and personal visions.

Featuring approximately 50 works by Latin American and Caribbean artists of Asian heritage, the exhibition explores the way in which Asian immigration influenced modern and contemporary art. No Ocean Between Us is permeated by a common theme of inclusiveness across ethnic identities and geographic backgrounds.

Conceived as an exhibition project in progress, with an essential educational aspect, the exhibition A recent art history (1960-2020), brings together two complementary and consecutive art collections - that of the Juan March Foundation and that of DKV Seguros - in the two museums of the Juan March Foundation, the Cuenca Museum of Abstract Art and the Juan March Foundation Museum in Palma.

Reactivating the market, promoting art sales and bringing about a reunion between contemporary art professionals have been the objectives that have driven the organization of this edition of ARCOmadrid 2021. These objectives have centered IFEMA MADRID's commitment to reanimate this essential event for boosting the art business, attracting great collectors from all over the world and discussing the immediate future of art. All of which lies on the essential axes of this edition: quality of the contents, internationality and presence of collectors.

Her work De dos cuerpos vengo (From two bodies I come) has been chosen by an international jury of experts among the five finalist proposals that are exhibited these days at ARCOmadrid 2021. Antonio Fernández Alvira, Fernando García, Juan López and Belén Rodríguez, have been the other four creators who have been part of the fifth edition of this award

Artists under 30 and from all over the world may apply for the call, which starts with a workshop and includes the possibility to obtain a 25,000 euro grant and the chance to exhibit in the context of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Il latte dei sogni / The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani.

This solo show, by one of the most recognized contemporary artists in Colombia, is made up of unseen works made specifically for this project. In Visceral, Luz Lizarazo (Bogotá, 1966) consolidates her work around the body as a living territory in which all forms of memory are registered. The selection of works exhibited serves as a prelude to the retrospective that she will have from August in the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MamBo), curated by the Italian Eugenio Viola, the museum’s chief curator.

The Y.ES annual grant for Art Writers aims to promote art criticism by supporting coverage of contemporary practice in and about El Salvador. This year, a grant of $500 is awarded to a writer from anywhere in the world to produce an article to be published on Terremoto’s international online platform. Application deadline: July 15, 2021

It is the absence of light. It is background and also figure. This exhibition proposes an ode to works in black color, freeing them from all drama. The representation of each piece is evident through the simplicity in the composition with the predominance of the flat, forceful color. The works are not explained or thought, they are only expressed. From the most subtle to the effective and concrete. Abstractions and geometric shapes, silhouettes, human faces and organisms. Conditionings and prejudices are not relevant. It is a formal and aesthetic choice for each artist, challenging to see beyond this present and uncertain time." expresses Laura San Martín, founder and curator of the Buenos Aires-based gallery.

Fundación Itaú invites the public to visit and tour the works selected for the 11th edition of the Itaú Visual Arts Award. In the context of the pandemic and due to the impossibility of carrying out an in-person exhibition, Fundación Itaú took on the design of the exhibition in Google Arts & Culture in collaboration with Adriana Lauria, curator of the Prize.

The fair will take place from July 7 to 11 with a special highlight on new protagonists. In addition to the General Program and the Opening Program, ARCO incorporates REMITENTE, a special Latin American art section and concentrates Artist Projects exclusively on women. In total, the fair will host 131 galleries, of which 54% are not Spanish.

Bringing together recent works by Bernardo Ortiz and Luis Roldan, the exhibition De saltos y tropiezos (Of Jumps and Stumbles) is the result of a year-long intellectual exchange between the artists. Thanks to their affinity for painting, their similar artistic pursuits and a longtime friendship, Ortíz and Roldán engage in an artistic dialogue marked by issues of confinement and the impossibility of leading a life free from temporal and spatial restrictions.

Collaborating to energize the local market, the galleries + Arte and Talō (both Ecuadorian) present parte de mí / aparte de mí (part of me / apart from me) by the artists Karen Miranda Rivadeneira and Misha Vallejo Prut. Exhibited at Talō and curated by Gabriela Moyano (+ Arte), the show will be open until July 26.

The works presented make use of and reference to the image as a channel, as a concept, as a medium. Migrating from one ontological level to another, Candeo highlights the way in which the contemporary world is built from immediate registers, multiple narratives, and memory models.

The Chilean artist Pablo Linsambarth (Santiago de Chile, 1989) exhibits in VIGIL GONZALES’ Online Viewing Room (Peru). The exhibition aims to account for a new figurative aesthetic in development in the American continent. Taking into consideration the historical and social framework that surrounds Linsambarth's artistic impulses, the paintings on display are part of an equally interesting dialogue on an aesthetic, conceptual and political level.

This is a call for young curators residing in the Community of Madrid, organized by Sala de Arte Joven. The initiative awards curatorial projects and its main objective is to highlight an overview of current artistic creation to professionals in the sector and the general public. Applications can be submitted until June 11, 2021.

Sitio inespecífico (Unspecific Site) is an essay on spaces and artistic practices in confinement, a virtual refuge in which a group of artists met for the exchange and production of works, assuming that, while the pandemic lasts, virtuality is a possible territory for encounter and action, but also wondering: which virtuality is desirable?

Galería RGR (Mexico City) presents the fourth individual exhibition in the country of the Guatemalan artist, curated by curator and art critic Daniel Garza-Usabiaga. Questioning the relationship between the object and the social masses, the exhibition will be open until June 5, 2021.

Michael Scoggins, New York-based artist, exhibits metonymic imagery of hints and references of the American culture in large scale artworks. On view until July 31st at Diana Lowenstein Gallery in Miami.  

Mignone's twelfth solo exhibition at the gallery coincides with the launch of the artist's new book. She is recognized for her paintings that explore an infinite and particular universe, but which, when meeting the eyes of the observer, end up becoming plural. There is no way to confront the artist's work without confronting oneself.

"I keep searching for images that leave me in a state of suspension, a stable / unstable situation, that create a certain discomfort and some plenitude (whether temporary or permanent, time will tell)," states the artist. Galeria Millan exhibits The Resignification of the Designified Form, first solo show by the artist Paulo Whitaker at the gallery. It is organized by Ricardo Kugelmas and brings together a set of 8 large-format oil paintings accompanied by a smaller group, elaborated during a residency at Art Farm Project, in São Paulo during October 2019.

The Museum commissions site-specific, immersive installation by the Brazilian artist that will transform the Museum’sCullinan Hall into a suspended walkway. Ernesto Neto: SunForceOceanLife, the seventh installment of the Museum’s summer immersive art series, will be on view from May 30 through September 26, 2021.
